Part One The Founder of Of The Monkees Davy Jones
And The Monkees Prove They Are A Real Band
Davy Jones was born in Manchester England,in Dec. 30,1945
as David Thomas Jones. He had three lovely sisters,Hazel,Beryl, and
Linda.Davy Jones parents, Harry Jones, and Doris Jones.Harry Jones
was a engineer railroad fitter, and also a home maker. His father loved
horses very much, and this where David Thomas Jones, got his love of
horses. His father gave him the affectionate name Davy. His mother
died of emphysema,Davy Jones dropped out of school, and wanted to
be a jockey instead of acting.
Davy Jones Father Dies in 1969 of emphysema.
Mr.Basil Foster was assigned to Davy Jones to be a apprentice
jockey, but his jockey career was short lived. However Basil knew a
friend who had worked in the theater in London West End.Basil had
encouraged Davy Jones to try out for the part of the Artful Dodger
in the production of Oliver! in London West End.During casting for
the musical Oliver! Basil said:"I got the kid." Davy got the part.
Production of Oliver! would be done in London and young Davy Jones
was only sixteen. Then go to New York, On The Ed Sullivan Show,
opening for a big group, Sunday February 6,1964.Listen to what Davy
said:"It was this same episode as The Beatles, first appearance on
The Ed Sullivan Show.I saw that night,I watched The Beatles from
the side of the stage.I saw girls go crazy, and I said to myself this is it,I
want a piece of that."This happened when Davy Jones was eighteen.
And it happened,Davy Jones was signed to a contract, things would
happen, with Ward Sylvester of Screen Gems a division of the company
we know as Columbia Pictures.
Davy Jones was nineteen years old singer and dreams were going
to happened when he was signed to Colpix Records,a label owned by
Columbia Pictures.
His album Davy Jones, was also on Colpix I P(493).It was Davy Jones
single debuted August 13,1965 "What Are We Going To Do ?"Which
was on the Hot 100.His dream of being like The Beatles would come.
Davy Jones was the only Monkee assigned to a deal with the studio.
He still would have to meet the producers of the show,Bob Rafelson
and Bert Schneider. Davy was ask in his screen test about being a jockey,
and was to dance for them. So Davy Jones did his famous Davy signature
shuffle dance. They said jokingly:You should seriously been a jockey."
(The Monkees"Never Look A Gift Horse In The Mouth"Davy did ride
both on bare back, and in jockey uniform,to save that boy's horse.)
Davy Jones was waiting for a vehicle he would be used in film. After
"The Loving Spoonful" was out because they were under contract. They
decided to capitalize on The Beatles movies: Help!,Hard Days Night.
They tossed around some names, and someone shouted out The Monkees,
and it stuck.
Davy Jones was the only one signed both to a recording contract, and
film rights. The Monkees idea was to have four guys with a folk rock
sound,with different back grounds.
They were to be Beatle's want-a-be's.Like the Marx Brothers, and act
like pop musicians. They were not allowed to play their own music.
They hired Don Kirschner, known as the "Golden Ear" because, what
ever,he picks as music for a group turns to gold in record sales. He
hired the best,to play The Monkees music. Don Kirschner had three
number ones, many top ten hits for The Monkees. He selected the best
songs.
Micky Dolenz went to his screen test for The Monkees he didn't
know he was to be formal.Why.What looked like Boyce and Hart,
who wrote many The Monkees songs, were there on the couch with
Micky and his guitar. He had on a pair jeans,a sweater, open collared
shirt, and his pair of surf tennis shoes. He played on the guitar, talked
about going the dentist making other's sick, and music.
Peter Tork's screen test,he came in playing like a Latin guitar type
melody. They ask him where he was from, and he said Washington. He
was ask, about,it must took a long time to get here.Talking about his
destination.He talks about driving a 1947 Chevy,and he paid $500.00
for the nose, and got to Las Vegas. The impression,is the car was junk,
or wrecked, when he talks jokingly about a airplane crash, and he is
flying.
Mike Nesmith, who prefers Micheal Nesmith is a gifted Texan,is
the gifted song writer, and musician, who was also on Colgems record
label,like Davy Jones,before he was a Monkee.He never considered
his music country, instead he felt The Monkees songs, should throw in
some folk rock for flavor.
When Michael Nesmith had his screen test, they ask his name.He
replied:"I am Micheal Blesnick,he said it was a psuedo name. They
ask about his stories in the air force.Mike told about how he jumped
over over the General's airplane. They ask why he played music. Now
he discover drawers with stuff in them so he opened them up.Ed who
was talking to Mike, said:"you are probably the ownly one who has
been in those drawers."Mike said:because there is stuff in them."
He ask about Mike being a goof, and Mike says no.Ed then sees
Mike going to another, cupboard. He ask Mike to do the butler bit.
Mike knows there is hot food,in a bowl like chicken soup.So he gets
it out and brings it to the table.
The video about shows all four Monkees screen tests. It shows the
original pilot of Here Comes The Monkees. However this is different.
It starts out with Davy Jones unhappy for blowing a gig that would pay
him $150.00.Then Micky Dolenz asked Davy what is really the matter.
Davy exclaims:"It was the Generals daughter, and because of my I
made her flunk her history test."Micky says:You did not make her
flunk, she did that on her own.The same sceen,is done with Mike, and
Peter, with two men that are teenagers too. These two are not of the
four real Monkees, but are There to help with the rehearsing. There is
also a section where a man comes into a music store. You know him as
Mr.Ziffle,in the seventies"Don't squeezeThe Charmon" Bathroom
Tissue. He ask for music for his teenage daughter, and they hand him a
record album. They ask:"You never heard of The Monkees? He ask:
"What do they sound like?" They all make monkey sounds, and he buys
the record.
In the pilot "Here Comes The Monkees"they drove around in a
yellow Ford Woody. The Monkees needed a special car to drive around in
their show The Monkees.A talented man who learned how to pinstrip,in
the army in Germany and learned watching Von Dutch. When He came
home was the man for the job. This man was working freelance for this
manGeorge Barris, and both cars called The Monkeemobiles were built in
Barris Kustoms with the help of Dick Dean. This young man striped cars.
The King of Stripers Dean Jeffries. He took a 1966 Pontiac GTO and
gave it a gasser touch, meets Model T Touring. This car would customized
like no other.A Pontaic 389 CID ,four barrel carburator, with mufflers.
On top,was a blower cover, with curve ridges that concealed the belts below.
The yellow blower had no rotors. The trunk was cut out to make way for the
bench seat. The interior was done in custom tan upholstery a automatic, with
a T-bar,to shift gears. The windshield was cut into two pieces. Then pieces
were angled, with a chrome bar, epoxied into place. Then the windshield was
shoved up into place to mount in windshield frame.Dean Jeffries angled the
1966 GTO front, and made new shell, both for the top and buttom of the front.
The lights were custom French oval glass lights. The lengthened fenders,in
front had slots cut out for the dummy megaphone gasser four pipes. The
three injector scoop, had been completely blacked out to represent the
gasser look,of those 1941 Willys gassers. The stock GTO grills were
blacked out,but kept the GTO logo.Even the front fenders had the real GTO
original badges. The custom top was tan,and looked like a touring top, that you
see on 1927 Model T Tourings, but longer. The gas cap in the back after the
top,was a Nascar gas cap.The car even had a fuel cell for the gas tank.It four
bucket seats, and the custom bench seat.Even the taillights were custom made,
and the rear fenders were lengthened. But the car,had the same stock wheel
base.It had a wood steering wheel center, with the chrome horn.Below the
blower on both left and right, were the four ribbed header pipes, like you see on
Duesenbergs.Along the ridges starting in the front of the car to the rear, were
white pinstriping.Dean Jeffries Lip Stick Red paint was applied over the whole
body. Then those pinstrips mentioned were applied. The car had chrome mags,
Craigar SS Diamond Five Spoke Mags, with Craigar Three Prong Knock Offs.
The tires were angled side walled bias wide oval Good Year's.The car had a
between the long rear custom taillights,a white and red real parachute. It was
Dean Jeffries who did the publicity picture by his shop, and pulled the chute.
The car had a big cut out in the touring like top,so the boys poked their head
out.The reason why the car doesn't have a real blower,is Mike said it was like
driving a tank.It was too powerful .The car had five hundred horsepower.
Dean Jeffries also made a custom wooden trailer with mags, but it wasn't used.
Mike Nesmith drove the car.Davy Jones next to Mike.
Micky Dolenz sat in the middle bucket seat behind Davy Jones. The Peter
sat in the bench seat in the rear,on the right like Davy, and Miky did.The
car was a hit.The Monkees did a black and white publicity photo with the
car. The hood had a custom chrome plate. On this the custon top of the
chrome radiator top half. Then a custom gold wide tire, and mag with wings.
The chrome radiator hose when this top.It can be seen on top. Then the
chrome ribbed blower cover connected to the yellow blower, and three
chrome injector scoop, with the front completely blacked out.The hood
opens to show the rest of engine. The Monkees loved this car.It was a big
hit at auto shows.
The Last Train To Clarksville single Came out August 1966.The
